This is just your daily reminder to keep your cells healthy and high performing by beginning to consume a much greater diversity of foods than you thought you needed.Civilization: Eats a few species of food. Everyone else: Eats hundreds of species!
Go through almost any recipe book or restaurant around the world and you’ll find an infinite permutation of flavors and textures, BUT they are actually serving you mostly the same few species of foods over and over again. A couple species of grain (wheat, rice), a couple roots (potatoes, carrots, sugar beets), a few animals (chicken, pork, beef, sheep, some fish), dairy and eggs from two of those animals, a couple species of vegetables (cruciferous, lettuce), and a few or so each of seeds, oils of some of the same seeds, nuts, sweet fruits, spices and sweeteners. Even my favorite farm to table organic purveyors are mostly guilty of this: A meat, a starch, a veg and some sugar and spice.
If you’ve made your way to this website, chances are you’ve broadened your food diversity a bit more. But are you content? Isn’t it finally time to gather the genetic and nutrient diversity of at least a hundred species the way your ancient ancestors had to.
Many of these top few species of food of course can be prepared in the healthiest of ways and can, if right for your body, be very appropriate for your health and performance protocol. I do find it personally disturbing though to know that I would be limited to just an average of a dozen species society chose for me, instead of the much wider genetic and nutritional diversity I could choose instead and that my ancestors would have chosen for me.
There are 3 ways I know of to more than quadruple the species you consume and give your cells the missing nutrients and more novel compounds that help your cells thrive when the tough gets going – that way you can achieve the level of happiness, focus and physical resilience you are truly capable of.
One way is to learn to forage, hunt and fish. Do it! However, it will take quite a while to build up the skills to get the diversity you need.
Another way is to travel the world and eat in regions that specialize in harvesting different species. That will also take some time and effort, and may prove more difficult to find food prepared healthfully and that actually are diverse.

Plant lectins are a suite of proteins that cause inflammation. Every body varies in sensitivity to lectins. You can brave a lighter dose of lectins (which for sensitive bodies is still enough to increase leaky gut, cause joint pain and lead to chronic health problems or just prevent them from healing) from nightshades, including potatoes, tomatoes and cayenne, and seeds, including almonds and quinoa. And you can take on a big dose from beans and grains, but the negative effects will still happen whether you notice them or not. Gluten is a type of lectin. Even the most wholesome organic farm to table cuisine can be rich in plant lectin ingredients. Do more research on lectins (there’s a lot out there) and consider an elimination diet abstaining from these for a while, then one by one add some back in and see how you react.

Gluten and its related cousin proteins are found in cereal grains like wheat, rye and barley and are naturally there to prevent the grain from being overeaten by pests. Yep, gluten and lectins are nature’s pesticides AKA chemical warfare, which is why they get such a bad rap and are now known for causing gut permeability, inflammation and immune system issues, including and especially in children age 0 to 100.

6. High Omega-6 Seed Oils

Morning Hacks: The Best and Worst Ways for High Performers to Start Their Day
I’ve been starting my day with ample hydration and massive amounts of quality nutrition for 15 years, but so much of society is all about a breakfast of sugar and drugs followed by more sugar and drugs. Some recommendations we often hear (like starting your day with sweet fruit) seem reasonable but actually have side effects that could zap your energy, mood and performance for the rest of the day. Here’s my list from the most terrible to the absolute best ways to start your day for maximum health and long lasting physical and mental energy.

The WORST Ways to Start Your Day

Avoid or completely modify these common habits:
  • Waking up, skipping drinking water and immediately drinking black coffee (a recipe for dehydration, headaches and never feeling quite well)
  • Toast and other dense carbs for breakfast (unless you like fungal overgrowth, blood sugar rollercoasters and feeling stressed)
  • Grain-based cereal with conventional milk (more excess carbs and inflammatory ingredients that subtract from your potential)

The HALF-DECENT Ways to Start Your Day

Make these more of an exception than the norm:
  • Organic fruit based smoothie (for most people this may lead to a sugar crash a couple hours or so later)
  • Organic fruit juices (juice is still high in sugar, just as high as soda and only moderately nutrient dense – probably only healthful for athletes who will immediately burn it all off – green juices are better, though can contain a significant amount of sugar as well)

The Very BEST Ways to Start Your Day

Do most of these every day forever:
  • Hydrate with plenty of pure (spring) water first thing (start doing this before bed the night before – it’s okay if you have to pee at night, it’s natural)

The number one quality I desire to see in all people I meet is that they can be clear and strong minded: consistent equanimity.
This is the gold: To have equanimity of thought and to continue to express supportive and logical beliefs about life and about oneself even amidst stress.
